For several months, I had been eyeing a new product called ‘Mighty Muffin’ every time I was shopping at GNC.
I was close to buying it on a number of occasions, but always decided against it at the last moment.
You see, over the years, I have become pretty skeptical whenever I encounter a new ‘high protein snack’.
Sure, many brands of protein powders and bars are decent these days – but there is much greater variability among protein snacks.
And while there are a few notable ones out there that make the cut – Quest Protein Chips, for example – many of the other high protein snacks leave something to be desired (without naming names here).
So, while I was intrigued by the promise of a delicious low-calorie, high-protein muffin, I also thought that it might actually turn out to be pretty unappetizing.
Well, one day I finally decided to bite the bullet and try it – and instantly all of my initial reservations suddenly vanished.
With that first bite, I knew immediately that Flapjacked had done something special with Mighty Muffin, and that I would be one of their repeat customers for a long time.
In fact, Mighty Muffins are so good that I wanted to write a proper review of them for all of our readers, so that you can try them out for yourselves and see if you like them as much as we do.
Mighty Muffin Flavors
As far as Mighty Muffin flavors go, there are currently 6 different options to choose from.
So far, I have tried 4 of them, and am still waiting to find S’mores (which for some reason isn’t sold nearby) and their newest edition, Chocolate Peanut Butter.
I’ll now go through some of my thoughts on each flavor, and which of them is my favorite.
It tastes very much like an apple cinnamon muffin, and really nails the right balance of cinnamon and sugar.
There are also little chunks of real apple mixed in, which add to the authentic, natural feel.
Right now, I’d say that this is probably my second favorite flavor from the 4 that I’ve tried so far.
In the end, I would say that it generally met my expectations, although I do find it to be one of the drier flavors overall.
The real peanut butter chips are definitely a nice touch, though, and when heated just right they’ll melt into the muffin, making the whole thing that much more delicious.
Overall, I’d say that it is my third favorite flavor, right after Apple Cinnamon.
However, that isn’t to say that it is bad. I still like it, and would happily eat it; it just wouldn’t be my top choice.
My main criticism is that the maple drops tend to stay too hard, even when cooked, making the texture feel a bit off.
Taste-wise it is pretty good, though, so don’t let that turn you off trying it for yourself.
In fact, when I first tried Double Chocolate, I wasn’t that into it at all.
I was expecting a sweet, chocolate muffin, and felt a bit let down when it actually wasn’t very sweat at all.
However, after having it a few times, and playing around with the microwave timing (more on that in a second), I came to really like the rich chocolate taste, and the authentic cake-like texture.
Are you having a hard time picking which Mighty Muffin flavor to try first?
Then I’d recommend going with the sample pack to start, which you can order from Amazon here.
This way, you’ll get 2 of each flavor try out, so that you can test them all and see which ones you think taste best.
Now that we’ve looked at each of the specific flavors, I wanted to go over how Mighty Muffins fare from a nutritional perspective.
After all, Mighty Muffin promises to be a healthy muffin alternative, so you obviously want it to stack up in this department.
Depending on which flavor you get, the number of calories will vary from 200-240 per container, but there is always 20 grams of protein in each one.
There is also only 4-8 grams of fat in each one, as well as 5-6 grams of fiber.
Here is the nutrition label from the Apple Cinnamon flavor, which comes in at 220 calories per container:
This makes a Mighty Muffin nutritionally comparable to something like a Quest Protein Bar.
Better still, since it is only around 200 calories and high in protein, it can serve as a great breakfast pastry replacement. Something to have with your morning coffee that won’t break your diet.
Now that we’ve gone over the basic nutrition, let’s take a look at some of the other ingredients in Mighty Muffins.
Here is a picture of the ingredients label from their Double Chocolate flavor (although all of them are pretty similar):
As you can see, it contains a combination of whey isolate and pea protein, which are both considered to be high quality protein sources.
In addition, you’ll see that many of the other main ingredients are natural, like bittersweet chocolate, butter, and gluten-free oat flour.
For sweetness, Mighty Muffin relies on a combination of xanthin gum and monk fruit, which studies suggest are safe and don’t have any adverse health effects (if you remember, monk fruit is also used to sweeten Arctic Zero).
Finally, Mighty Muffin contains probiotics – specifically, Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 6086 – which has been shown to help with digestion.
So all-in-all, from an ingredient perspective, Muffin Muffin definitely passes the test with flying colors.
One potential roadblock with Mighty Muffins, when compared to other protein supplements, is that they do require some preparation.
This isn’t gourmet cooking here, but you do need a microwave, so these aren’t going to be as good if you want something to eat on-the-go.
Still, if you do have access to a microwave, these things are incredibly easy to make.
You just open the container, add water, stir it up, and then put it in the microwave for 35 seconds. That’s it.
Here is a video showing just how easy this really is:
In our experience, you’ll want to play around with the amount of time you heat these, since the optimal time can vary depending on the power of your microwave.
Also, if you prefer your Mighty Muffins on the moist side (as I do), then you’ll want to undercook them just slightly. In my microwave, this comes to 30 seconds – but again you’ll want to experiment within the 30-40 second range to find what you like best.
The Bottom Line On Mighty Muffins
At this point, you may be wondering if you should go out and get a couple of these for yourself.
Well, let me make this easy: you absolutely should!
Over the last couple months, I have introduced Mighty Muffins to many of my friends and clients, and without exception everyone has liked them.
In fact, I would be comfortable saying that they are the best tasting high protein snack that I have come across in quite some time.
Here in NYC, they are consistently selling out at several of the GNCs that I’ve been to, with the store managers telling me that they’ve seen a big surge in popularity over the last few months.
And that is because Mighty Muffins are an excellent product, which I highly suspect will take off in the next few years.
They taste great, are filling, include only healthy ingredients, have a lot of protein, and are very easy to make.
Hell, they’re even gluten-free, for those of you who are into that…
So try them out for yourself and let me know what you think!
